Evolutionary adaptation, diversification and complexification emerge from the interplay between random genetic variation and natural selection. We seek insight into the mechanisms behind the creative potential of biological evolution (from molecules to ecology) with a particular focus on the cell's protein nano-machines.

Our research combines real-time bacterial evolution experiments with synthetic biology and biophysics to study how mutation and selection together shape the evolution of living organisms. We are also interested in developing tools for the evolutionary engineering of cells and their molecular building blocks.
